Police Authority Donation Helps Brookside Fireworks Event

West Mercia Police Authority and West Mercia Police have lent their support to a Fireworks Display that is taking place in Brookside on Thursday night by donating a significant sum of money to the event.

The Fireworks Display - which has been organised by the Brookside Improvement Group (BIG) in partnership with the Wrekin Housing Trust - is being held on 10 November on the field next to Windmill Primary School. To help ensure all safety aspects are covered around the Fireworks event, BIG applied to the Telford Policing Board, via West Mercia Police, for a donation from West Mercia Police Authority's Community Safety Initiatives Fund so that a specialist fireworks company could be used to run the event.

In total £900 had already been donated by the Wrekin Housing Trust and Telford & Wrekin Council's Safer and Communities Fund and members of BIG were delighted to discover that their application for a donation from the Policing Board had been successful.

Inspector Mark Bellamy, who is in charge of Local Policing in Central Telford, said: "We fully supported the Brookside Improvement Group's application to the Community Policing Board Fund and were really pleased when confirmation came through of a £600 donation. "This event was huge success last year and our Local Policing Team in Brookside feels it is important that its takes place again in 2011. The event provides an opportunity for local residents to come together at a well organised, structured event and will hopefully promote community cohesion and help reduce the number of calls emergency services receive about anti-social behaviour in the Brookside area. The Fire Service continues to be concerned about the number of wheelie bin fires they have to attend and we hope this organised event will help reduce the amount of calls they do get called to. There is no doubt that 2010's event saw a significant reduction in reports of unsupervised fires in Brookside and we really hope that we will see similar results by helping to ensure that this event takes place again this year."
