Becoming an Independent Member
How to apply to be an Independent Member
The Authority currently has no Independent Member vacancies.
The Government is proposing to replace Police Authorities with a directly elected Police and Crime Commissioner for each policing area. Click here for further details
Selection Process
All applications are considered by an independent selection panel. The panel is made up of three people, comprising two people appointed by the Police Authority and an 'independent assessor' chosen by the Police Authority from a list which is compiled by the Home Office.
This member chairs the panel.
The job of the panel is to produce a shortlist of suitable applicants, which is usually twice the number of people needed. The members of the police authority (except those who are applying to be appointed again) will then make the final selection of new independent members from the applicants on the shortlist. You may be called for an interview at one or both of these stages.
